Coco Chanel, French fashion designer whose pursuit of simplicity made her an important twentieth century figure in fashion and founder of the brand, Chanel, paved the way for modern women to dress in comfort and style. In 1913, Chanel established a boutique in Deauville, the elegant seaside town in the northwest of France that was created as a playground for the wealthy and stylish of Europe. There, she introduced luxury casual clothes that were created for leisure and sports.
